MONTPELLIER, France., 21 June-- La Fete de la Musique was first organized in 1987 by the French government. It is a night set aside in France to celebrate music in all its forms. Throughout the country, every town and village enjoys music in some way. Montpellier had no fewer than 300 scheduled events (along with countless other musicians at every turn and corner) ranging from classical to rock to jazz to reggae to Gypsy.

Kiko Motos and his band, Gipsyland performed on the main stage in the Jardins de Pitou. I was there, accompanied by several of my classmates from my French School. How wonderful that a group of friends from Japan, Korea, Turkey, USA, Switzerland, Sweden and Canada came together to hear a group of Gypsies play in the South of France!
This was the first time Gipsyland played at the Fete and they were warmly welcomed by the crowd of close to 10,000. The Mayor of Montpellier arrived to personally welcome Kiko and his group to the Fete. It was a treat to see the entire original Gipsyland together. The lineup in the photos from left to right across the stage:

Kiko : Lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Juanito (Kiko's son) : Lead and backing vocals, rhythm guitar
        Mario : Lead guitar
        Babe : Rhythm guitar, vocals
        Tonino : Rhythm guitar, vocals
The back line included Steven on drums and Bernard on bass.

Kiko's son (big smile in green) and nephew, Miguel (white tee), son of Kiko's brother, Juanito Motos, were front and center in the crowd doing palmas. Little girls danced onstage. From the first notes to the final bows, a good time was had by all!

Vive la France et Fete de la Musique!
